Flashes and floaters are a common patient complaint when visiting the optometrist. Mostly they are harmless but they can be associated with retinal detachment (see right) which is a serious eye complaint and will need medical attention.

The OCT image here on the left show floaters hovering above the retina and appear as ‘clouds’ of small spots.
